Computer Village is meant for residential not market – Lagos Govt. reaffirms relocation plan

The Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, emphasized today, 20th of February 2024, that the government’s decision to relocate traders from Computer Village, Ikeja to Katangua Market in Lagos is firmly grounded within the legal framework.

During his visit to the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and an on-the-spot assessment of Computer Village, Olajide explained that, according to state law, the Computer Village Area, originally designated as a Residential Area, has evolved into a bustling market, contradicting the modern city plan.

“The Computer Village Area still remains a Residential Area, and its Land Use has not been changed by the State Government. This is the main reason the government is relocating the traders to Katangua for proper settlement,” he clarified.

Emphasizing the adherence to rules and regulations, Olajide highlighted the need to maintain the residential status if the law designates it as such. He asserted, “If the rules say it is a residential area, then it must remain a residential area. Therefore, the government has to make provisions and also accommodate the people who are in this area, and that is the reason why the State Government is moving them to Katangua.”

In line with the State Comprehensive Plan, Olajide outlined the envisioned development of Katangua, including market stores, shopping malls, banking facilities, storage, clinics, hotels, recreational centers, creche/schools, and other dynamic features. These additions aim to enhance market patronage and align with the government’s THEMES PLUS Agenda.

Addressing concerns about the relocation process, Olajide assured traders that transparency would be maintained, emphasizing that the government would involve them in the decision-making process. He underscored that nothing would be imposed on the traders during the planned relocation.

Additionally, the Special Adviser urged the public to adhere strictly to the State Building Codes and follow the designated Land Use for construction. This, he explained, is essential to avoid legal breaches and ensure compliance with established laws.

The government’s stance on relocating Computer Village aligns with legal provisions and the broader urban development plan, aiming to create a more structured and compliant environment while providing traders with a suitable alternative in Katangua Market.
