Omar Alieu Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, has deployed an Election Observation Mission of 40 observers to Togo to watch the parliamentary and regional elections slated for April 29, 2024.
According to a statement issued by the regional bloc on Sunday, the mission is in accordance with Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and represents the organization’s support to its Member States in the conduct of elections.
Mrs Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, The Gambia’s former Vice-President, leads the expedition.
The delegation includes Ambassadors from ECOWAS-accredited Member States, representatives from the ECOWAS Court of Justice and Parliament, civil society organizations, media professionals, and West African election observers.
The observation mission is being sent in response to the suggestions of a pre-election fact-finding mission that visited Togo from April 15 to 20, 2024, to review the election preparations.
During its stay in Togo, the observation team will interact with key stakeholders in the electoral process and monitor voting until April 29, 2024.
