A devastating incident occurred in the FESTAC area of Lagos State on Friday night, as two women lost their lives to a lightning strike during a downpour.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the tragic event in a social media post on Saturday.
According to Hundeyin, the victims were residing in a makeshift structure built under high-voltage wires, which caught fire when the lightning struck. The intense electrical discharge electrocuted the women instantly, leading to their untimely demise.
The shanty, which was built under the high-voltage wires, proved to be a deadly trap for the unsuspecting women.
Hundeyin’s post read, “Somewhere on First Avenue, Festac, two women remained indoors during the downpour yesterday. Lightning struck, electrocuting them instantly and causing a fire outbreak. They lived in a shanty built under high-voltage wires. May their souls rest in peace.”
As the investigation into the incident continues, the authorities must prioritize measures to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
